The study, published in Cell Metabolism, shows that the fungal pathogen, Candida albicans, consumes glucose during systemic infections. This causes hypoglycaemia thereby depleting the essential nutrient to maintain macrophage function. Glucose supplementation prevents immune cell death and the high fatality rate associated with fungal infections.
This study shows how Neisseria gonorrhoea evades innate immunity by releasing extracellular vesicles that target mitochondria of macrophages and induce apoptosis.
